Most people lose lots they wanted for one reason: they bid the minimum, walked away, and got outbid by a dollar while they slept. Proxy bidding exists to fix that.
What you actually enter
When you place a bid on Space Coast Auctions you are not entering the price you will pay. You are entering the most you would pay. The system keeps that number private and bids on your behalf, one increment at a time, only as far as needed to keep you in front.
A worked example
- Lot opens at $20You set a maximum of $60. The price shows $20 with you leading.
- Someone bids $30The system answers for you at $35. Still leading, still under your limit.
- They try $50You are bumped to $55 automatically. You have not touched the page.
- They bid $70That beats your $60. You get an outbid email and text, and can decide whether to raise.
If two people set the same maximum, the earlier one keeps the lead. Another reason to bid your real number as soon as you see the lot.
Why the minimum bid is a trap
Bidding the minimum feels careful. In practice it means you must come back every time someone nudges the price, and the lots that matter to you close while you are at work or asleep. A maximum bid does the watching for you.
Decide what the item is worth to you before you look at the clock. The clock is the auction’s tool, not yours.

Raising, and the 30-second rule
You can raise your maximum at any time; you cannot lower it. Any bid placed inside the final 30 seconds pushes the close out by another 30 seconds, so nobody can snipe a lot at the last moment. If you truly want it, your maximum is the only thing that decides.
